Michael Atkinson's Railway Photographs
About Me
Hi, and welcome to my fotopic site. My name is Michael David Atkinson, and I am a 15 year old railway enthusiast. I love steam, but I photograph diesel and some electric aswel. Most photographs are from my local preserved line, the East Lancashire Railway, where I work as a member of station staff on the main station, Bury Bolton Street.

East Lancashire Railway - 20th Anniversary
The East Lancashire Railway finally re-opened to passengers on the 25th of July 1987, running back then only from Bury Bolton Street to Ramsbottom, after BR left the line in the mid '70s. Now, the line is in full swing again running the full 12 miles from Heywood to Rawtenstall, the maximum distance that the preserved line can have (unless we share the Nat Rail line to Rochdale...watch this space!)
Sat 16th Jun 0745407 'The Lancashire Fusilier' at Castleton
Ian Riley's Black 5 was on a railtour, and passed through my home of Castleton a total of three times! She arrived at noon and was stabled in the sidings for 50 minutes and exited towards Manchester Victoria, and then came storming through later in the evening.
Sat 16th Jun 07East Lancashire Railway - War Weekend
I was working on Bury Bolton Street on the final day of the 2007 War Weekend, and got these shots. Locos present were 3440 'City of Truro', 5690 'Leander' and 6201 'Princess Elizabeth'
Sat 2nd Jun 0740145 at Manchester Victoria

Sat 17th Mar 07The Liverpool and Manchester Railway
The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the famous worlds first intercity railway. Originally running from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Liverpool Road, the line now runs into both Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly. The railway is an amazing feat of engineering, the cuttings are still there, and the chisel marks from the astounding 'navvies' who cut them are still there. Chat Moss - an 'oozing, black peat bog' - claimed many a life during the creation of this railway, and Stevenson's idea to have the railway 'float' over the moss still works to this very day. The grandeur of this line is one that will never leave it.

Took a wonder through Castleton's steelworks today, then took a shortcut accross the golfcourse to Heywood (Heywood pictures can be found in the ELR section)

Mon 1st Jan 07East Lancashire Railway - Thomas Event
Myself, Chris Gallagher and Alex Riley spent the day reminiscing our childhoods at the ELR as we were hauled up and down the line by trains with characteristic faces! Locos include Jubilee 5690 'Leander', Black 5 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier', Class 40 D335 (soon to be known as 'East Lancashire Railway - Trevor Jones'), an 08 shunter and of course, number 32 'Gothernburg' masquerading as Thomas.

Mon 1st Jan 07Michael and Ian's Modern Day Out
My friend Ian Hale and I went out for a day on the modern railways, including lines such as the Manchester Airport line. We rode on units such as Class 158 DMUs and 323 EMUs and saw some class 92 electric locomotives at Warrington Bank Quay. It was a brilliant day out, and we hope you enjoy the photographs!

    Mon 1st Jan 07LMS Jubilee 5690 'Leander'
There are few locomotives at the East Lancashire Railway which are in their original pre-1948 liveries, and Leander is a fine example. Enjoy these photographs, in which she looks resplendant in her LMS Crimson Lake livery.
